about

The main idea of “3” was to record trio-based music on piano, playing in live conditions with a bass player and a drummer. It was also Benoit Widemann’s third album. Therefore “3” became very naturally the title of the album during the recording sessions.

Throughout the six main tunes, Benoit Widemann played with Kirt Rust and François Laizeau on drums, Sylvin Marc and Dominique Bertram on bass, in different combinations of trios. Benoit Widemann then worked alone with his analog synthesizers (Moog, Oberheim, Prophet) creating a sophisticated dressing of the music. While the pianos were played live with bass and drums, the other instruments were added afterwards, track by track. This unusual method preserves the “live” character of the playing, while giving the whole album a nice studio-quality finish.
